NSF Awards $15 million to DataONE

Earth to Data: Making Sense of Environmental Observations
National Science Foundation Awards $15 million to Environmental Science Data Project

As with the proverbial canary carried by miners, birds serve as an indicator of the health of our environment. Many common species have experienced significant population declines within the last 40 years. Suggested causes include habitat loss and climate change, however to fully understand bird distribution relative to the environment, extensive data are needed.

PLOS, CDL, and DataONE join forces to build incentives for data sharing

The University of California Curation Center at the California Digital Library, in partnership with PLOS and DataONE, are pleased to announce the launch of a new project to develop data-level metrics. This project is funded by an EAGER grant from the National Science Foundation. The project, titled “Making Data Count: Developing a Data Metrics Pilot”, will result in a suite of metrics that track and measure data use.

DataUp to Merge with Dash

The DataONE ITK tool 'DataUp' is to merge with the University of California (UC) data sharing platform 'Dash'.

Dash is a UC-wide project to create a platform that allows researchers to easily describe, deposit and share their research data publicly. Because of the similar functionality to DataUp the two projects will merge enable better support for our users.

New partnership targets data persistence

A new collaboration between the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) and the Data Observation Network for Earth (DataONE) aims to support long-term persistence of the biodiversity data shared through the network.

GBIF Secretariat and DataONE have signed a memorandum of cooperation that includes plans for a pilot repository to archive datasets shared through GBIF, using the services built by DataONE.

LTER-Europe (the European Long-Term Ecosystem Research Network) Joins DataONE

LTER-Europe, the European regional sub-network of the global ILTER (International Long-Term Ecological Research Network) has joined DataONE as a Member Node. LTER-Europe helps to coordinate ILTER activities in Europe and represents European-level interests in ILTER. Over 450 sites holding extremely varied data are part of this network of 21 National LTER-Networks. Some sites have more than 100 years of data.

New Dashboard Provides Real Time Information on DataONE Exposed Content

Enhanced exposure for DataONE Member Nodes provides users with real time information on current data holdings within the DataONE network of repositories.

Released this month, the new ‘Member Node Dashboard’ shows the volume and number of data and metadata files discoverable through the DataONE network, in addition to charting file uploads across time. Additionally, a table of current, upcoming and replication nodes enables users to access individual Member Node statistics pages to explore the data metrics, including information on when newest content was added.
