The Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, Millbrook, New York, is one of the world’s leading independent environmental research organizations. Research at the Cary Institute has been instrumental in informing the Clean Air Act, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and environmental management practices throughout the Northeast, including the Hudson River, New York’s Catskill and Adirondack forests, and the watershed of Baltimore, Maryland. Hallmark projects include studies of the impact of acid rain on forests and freshwater ecosystems, unraveling the relationship between biodiversity loss and emerging infectious diseases, and tracking how climate change influences the spread of invasive species.
The Cary Institute does not maintain their own data repository, but offers education and guidance to their researchers for managing and depositing their data. As such, the Institute launched a Figshare for Institutions portal last year to provide a secure repository for their research output. In order to further promote an open culture of data sharing, DataONE has worked with Figshare to develop a Member Node adapter that enables Figshare collections to participate as DataONE Member Nodes. The Cary Institute is the first to leverage this community infrastructure to make their data more discoverable through both Figshare and DataONE.
Through the Figshare for Institutions portal, the Cary Institute will largely contribute field sampling and experimental data to DataONE, which now exposes over 1.17 million data objects across the network of repositories. DataONE is pleased to welcome the Cary Institute, as a partner powered by Figshare, to further support the mission to preserve, expand access to, and improve usability of critical data.
About DataONE: DataONE enables universal access to data and also facilitates researchers in fulfilling their need for data management and in providing secure and permanent access to their data. DataONE offers the scientific community a suite of tools and training materials that cover all aspects of the data life cycle from data collection, to management, analysis and publication.
About Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies: Cary Institute is an independent nonprofit center for environmental research. Since 1983, their scientists have been investigating the complex interactions that govern the natural world and the impacts of climate change on these systems. Their numerous findings lead to more effective management and policy actions and increased environmental literacy and staff are global experts in the ecology of: cities, disease, forests, and freshwater.
About Figshare for Institutions: Figshare is a web-based platform to help academic institutions manage, disseminate and measure the public attention of all their research outputs. Figshare provides repository infrastructure for Institutions, Publishers, Funders and Industry partners. We believe in a future where academics are appropriately rewarded for all aspects of their careers. We build simple to set up infrastructure, for those seeking to comply with policies and mandates around open research.
