DataONE welcomes the Terrestrial Ecosystem Research Network (TERN) as the first Member Node in Australia and the 29th overall to join the federation. TERN is a network-of-networks, somewhat similar to the Long Term Ecological Research Network based in the United States, which also participates with DataONE as a long-term collaborator. TERN brings the overall volume of data discoverable via... read more

DataONE welcomes the NM EPSCoR as the 28th Member Node to join the federation. NM EPSCoR and DataONE have a long history of collaboration. The development of a Tier 4 Member Node at EPSCoR enhances the partnership by providing another replication target for other Member Nodes in the federation and increasing visibility of NM EPSCoR’s holdings to a broader audience.

DataONE welcomes the International Arctic Research Center (IARC), based at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, as the 27th Member Node to join the federation. IARC serves the United States and the international Arctic research community by building an integrated understanding of the Arctic, as a system, with clear and accurate conceptualization of the role of the Arctic in the broader global system.

DataONE welcomes the Global Lake Ecological Observatory Network (GLEON) as the 26th Member Node to join the federation. GLEON, an international grassroots network of people, lakes, and data, was founded in 2005. GLEON limnologists, ecologists, information technology experts, and engineers conduct innovative science by sharing and interpreting high-resolution sensor data to understand, predict, and communicate the role and response of lakes in a changing global... read more

The California Digital Libraries, PLOS, and DataONE are partners in Make Data Count (http://articlemetrics.github.io/MDC/), an NSF-funded project to design and develop metrics that track and measure data use, i.e. “data-level metrics” (DLMs). During the first phase of the project, we gathered information about the needs of researchers: How do they want to get credit for the data they produce? What do they want to know about how their data is... read more

We are pleased to announce that the Minnesota Population Center (MPC) joins DataONE as its 25th Member Node. MPC is initially exposing metadata from Terra Populus (TerraPop), with plans to add more data from the vast MPC corpus. TerraPop is a major project within the MPC funded by the National Science Foundation and is the second DataNet project to join the DataONE network as a Member Node, strengthening the collaborative relationships that exist across the DataNet federation.

DataONE, PLOS and the California Digital Library are partnered in a project to explore data level metrics (see: https://www.dataone.org/news/plos-cdl-and-dataone-join-forces-build-ince...). As part of this work, CDL is conducting a survey to investigate metrics for datasets. The aim is to learn what metrics of use and impact would be useful to researchers and repositories.

Earth to Data: Making Sense of Environmental Observations
National Science Foundation Awards $15 million to Environmental Science Data Project

As with the proverbial canary carried by miners, birds serve as an indicator of the health of our environment. Many common species have experienced significant population declines within the last 40 years. Suggested causes include habitat loss and climate change, however to fully understand bird distribution relative to the... read more
