Discussion of advances relevant to the DataONE network

Repositories frequently need to both replicate datasets that are held in other repositories (for policy, availability, and other reasons) and to link to external datasets that represent sometimes the same and sometimes related datasets. This community call will discuss current challenges, approaches and potential solutions.

The selection of licenses for data and metadata hosted in repositories, shared by researchers, and reused by end users necessarily reflects an attempt to balance a variety of interests. This DataONE Community Call will bring together the community and a group of invited participants to discuss the lessons learned and decisions made in selecting data licenses for use in a variety of contexts.

Schema.org provides a simple mechanism to include machine readable, structured metadata in human readable web pages, including descriptions of Dataset entries on dataset landing pages. This community call will introduce the Science-on-schema.org guidelines in support of metadata harvesting by DataONE as a streamlined path into the DataONE federation and harvesting by large scale, generalist, commercial indexers (e.g. Google). We will highlight additional resources available for working with schema.org, and include experiences of some that have implemented the guidelines for their repositories.

This community call will bring together panelists from multiple networks that have some degree of existing connectivity with the DataONE networked community and start a discussion focused on opportunities for collaborative and coordinated activities that can efficiently meet and provide cost-effective solutions for shared community needs while contributing to increased sustainability of network capabilities.

This community call will discuss current DataONE research data management training materials, activities and resources in the context of broader community initiatives. All individuals with an interest in data management training should attend.
